Official Apple iPhone Thread (news, updates, and install guides)
Ok, this first post will be about all new updates and info, so basically iPhone news. It will be updated regularly so always check back to the first page (here) for the latest.
The second post in this thread will be for guides on how to do certain things, and finally the third post for whatever info is left. Im currently reserving the next few posts incase i need more space. DO NOT post any crap here, post about the iphone, post about stuff u read me post or questions etc, but NO SPAM AT ALL.
Today at a town-hall meeting at Apple's Infinite Loop campus in Cupertino, Steve Jobs showed off the iPhone software developer's kit for the first time. There has been a lot of speculation about what the kit would include, and what it specifically wouldn't. Now Steve Jobs says it will have the same APIs and Tools that Apple itself uses to develop iPhone apps. Here are details:

Apple annunces push email, push calanders, activesyc and full exchange support
All the hand-wringing about whether or not the iPhone's suitable for corporate environments is basically being put to rest. It's getting everything a proper drone phone needs: push email, push calendar, push contacts, global address list, Cisco VPN, certificates and identities, WPA2/ 802.1x, security policies, device configuration and Remote Wipe. Plus, the biggie: Exchange support built into the native mail, calendar and contact apps, with on/off toggles for each of them under the Exchange server tab. Nike and Disney (natch) are talking about using the iPhone's corporate ActiveSync support. Will your corporate overlords?

I've got good news and better news. The good news is that the iPhone is getting multitouch games that use the accelerometer and every bell and whistle of the iPhone for controls. The better news? Developers such as EA and Sega are on board. EA is bringing the insanely anticipated game Spore to it. All 18 levels. Yes, this is real. Oh mercy. Sega is also bringing Super Monkey Ball, and the App Store looks like it'll have a bunch of casual games available as well. Does this bring the iPhone up to DS and PSP levels? We'll have to see just how these games look and play, but it's pretty exciting stuff

Iphone gets AIM client
Finally, after so many months, IMing is coming to the iPhone with AOL iChat native for iPhone. No more forced texting! It'll support invisible mode, you'll be able to make your own buddy icons using your stored photos, and you'll swipe to switch between conversations

Apple store exclusive distributer of iphone apps
Today in Cupertino, Steve Jobs announced that Apple would sell iPhone (and iPod touch) applications over App Store, which can be used over-the-air on the iPhone itself, or can be sideloaded via iTunes on a computer. It comes with the 2.0 firmware update. Apple says it's exclusive, meaning it's the only place people will go to get iPhone apps.

Iphone SDK Available Today for free, 99$ to publish
If you want to be an iPhone developer, you can start your twitchy fingers in about an hour, when the SDK will be available for download. It's free, but if you want to publish and distribute your programs through the iTunes App Store (the only way to do so) it'll run you $99 a year. On the bright side, budding programmers, there's a $100,000,000 iFund for developers, totally crushing Android's penny offerings. After that, Apple won't charge you anything to host or credit processing, if your app is free—otherwise they take 30 percent of the price you set

Apple to allow VOIP
If someone develops a VoIP program for the iPhone, Apple will only prevent it from making calls over a cell network to protect poor little AT&T. If you're in a Wi-Fi hotspot, however, go nuts. This opens up a pretty big door for developers to make some sweet programs that'll save you quite a few cell minutes. Basically, it'll allow all iPhone users to have what T Mobile offers with its @Home program but without the monthly fee, at least as soon as someone writes the program. This is gonna be huge

Apple gave Sun kind of the cold shoulder, not giving them the opportunity to put Java on the iPhone for Java apps. Now that the SDK is out, Sun's decided to just take matters into their own hands and prep a Java Virtual Machine for the device that'll allow Java applets to run on it. The JVM for iPhone will be based on Java Micro Edition, allowing apps like games and enterprise applications.
iPhone 2.0 Unlocked with Modified Beta Firmware, Runs Any Application
The beta firmware that comes with the iPhone SDK has been modified to unlock and jailbreak the iPhone, even before its public release. Part of the Pwned Project, the hacked firmware will allow you to do anything you want, including the installation of both official and unofficial apps, and even patches. We got the exclusive details directly from the DevTeam, including the fact that it is going to be extremely hard for Cupertino to close this new hole:
pwned firmware means it's custom [firmware], you can have it install anything you would ever want :-) Pwned works with some magic, it will be hard to close but nothing is impossible (from Apple) with a mindtwist. But first, we will enjoy
They told us that this is all part of their previous Pwned project, which instead of trying to hack into the iPhone, directly patches the firmware itself to both unlock it, so you can use the iPhone with any carrier you want, and allow you to install any applications you want.
According to the Dev Team, the custom 2.0 firmware (technically, 1.2.0,) is now up and running without problems in many of their iPhones, running unsigned applications without a single problem. However, current Installer.app applications need to be changed: "they changed lots of the API, a lot. We will see how much has to be changed to the Toolchain [the previous development tool for iPhone independent developers] to still work after 2.0."
The best news, however, is this: "the hacked 1.2 firmware works with anything. AT&T and others, it's pwned. And Apple will not really be able to patch it this time... somehow "
I'm flabbergasted. As Han Solo would say, "that's one in a million, kid!" Once again.
Apple WWDC 2008 Dates Set June 9th-13th: "A Landmark Event in More Ways Than One"
Apple just announced World Wide Developers Conference dates as June 9th through June 13th. That means the keynote is likely to be set at June 9, 2008, a Tuesday Monday, and tech journos everywhere can now resume planning their summer vacations around it. What's up with the two bridges? Maybe they're talking about iPhone and Mac Dev...yes, says so on the WWDC site (from gizmodo)
Latest iPhone 2.0 Firmware Unlocked Again in 24 Hours
The iPhone Dev Team has demonstrated that Apple will probably have a very difficult time patching the iPhone to thwart their efforts: not even 24 hours after the release of the latest update for the iPhone firmware 1.2.0 (or 2.0, as The Steve calls it,) they sent us this picture showing that they have pwned it again, getting it to work completely unlocked, and run all applications. As they told us: "Apple will not really be able to patch it this time." Check the new Contacts application, which was in the Touch and seems to have been revealed in this latest revision (gizmodo)
At last! The latest beta version of Apple's iPhone 1.2.0 firmware gives you the possibility of saving pictures straight from Safari and into the Photo Album. We tried and it works: just hold your finger against an image for a longer time than usual and the popup dialog will appear. The applications are many, like saving friends' Facebook images, save loads of NSFW pics in Flickr, set iPhone backgrounds using those (or snatch our exclusive iPhone backgrounds), and perhaps the most obvious one: online **** collecting for offline **** watching.
How to jailbreak, activate, unlock, and upgrade ANY iphonw FW to 1.1.4 (NOT tested on Vista, pics to be added soon)
1) you have to restore your phone. Connect to itunes and click restore. It will then ask you if you want to backup ur info (contacts, music etc) Click yes. Then itll will ask u to restore and upgrade firmware, again, click yes. At this point its going to download 1.1.4 which is around 160mb so give it time, once its downloaded itll automaticaly relock ur phone and have it upgraded to 1.1.4.
Once this process is complete ull see that ur set will say wrong sim etc and itunes may give u an error. Dont worry, this is what you want. Close itunes.
2) Go to [Only registered and activated users can see links. ] and download the ziphone software by clicking on the large picture. Once you have the software, all you have to do is click "Do it all" which will activate, unlock, and jailbreak ur iphone. Takes a few mins.
3) after its complete, reopen itunes and just resync all ur info. Thats it, ur on 1.1.4.
Note: keep ur iphone plugged in the entire time If itunes opens during ziphone process just close it.
(This is foolproof but remember do at ur own risk and follow exactly as i said.)

There is this app in installer called touchpad pro. It is simply ace. It turns your iphone into a multitouch pad (like on the macbook air etc) and you can control your pc with it. Works very easily, and the mouse movement, scrolling, selecting, right clicking, zooming etc is all flawless. Great for browsing while sitting back, controllin media player etc etc.
Try it, trust me, u will like it quite a bit.
HOW TO:
1) Start Installer and click on the Install button. Go to Utilities. Touchpad Pro should already be there.
If it isn't, go to Sources, and then add Community Sources. Touchpad Pro should definitely be there now.
2) Download TightVNC and install it.
3) If there's no icon with a V on the bottom right corner of the screen, find TightVNC in your Start Menu > Programs folder, and click on Launch VNC Server.
4) Set the password to something you'll remember.
Hover your mouse over the V icon on the bottom right corner of the screen, and write down the IP address that comes up.
5) Next, run the app on ur phone, Click on the + icon at the top right corner of the screen
Enter anything for the name
Enter the IP address or host name you wrote down earlier. This can either be four numbers with dots, e.g., 192.168.1.42
Enter the password you were supposed to remember
Click Save
Connect by clicking on the name you entered (e.g., homepc). If all goes well, you should now be connected to your PC.
Its very simple, and I have to say one of the best apps ive ever seen on the iphone. Give it a try.
Watch it in action here: [Only registered and activated users can see links. ]
ps- i should also say, this works best via wifi, ull see no lags etc, havent tested edge yet but i will later on.
How to change your carrier logo to any text you want (mobilink etc)
A small app which im sure many of you already use, is called Make It Mine. Allows you to change your carrier name at the top (mobilink etc) to any text you want. Simple yet nice. Look for it in installer.

Use Your iPhone's Internet Connection On Your Laptop
Written by Adam Pash, senior editor for Lifehacker
It's great that your iPhone has a data plan and a killer mobile browser, but when you're sitting at the airport waiting to catch a plane with your laptop right next to you, wouldn't it be nice to use your full-on desktop browser? Out of the box your iPhone won't allow you to tether your EDGE data connection to another computer wirelessly, but with a little ingenuity on your part you'll be browsing the net on your laptop through your iPhone's data service in no time.
NOTE: You're probably asking yourself: "Isn't the EDGE data network that the iPhone uses SLOW?" Well, yes it is. But if you're at all like me, sometimes a slow full-screen browsing session is better than slow browsing on the small screen.
I've only tested this method on my MacBook Pro, but since SSH is platform independent, this should be a workable solution on Windows, Mac, or Linux.
What You'll Need
For this guide, you'll need:
A computer with Wi-Fi capable of creating an ad-hoc computer-to-computer connection (yours is)
A jailbroken iPhone (If you don't know how to jailbreak your iPhone
The OpenSSH iPhone application (I'll show you how to get this below)
An SSH client on the computer you're using. If you're on a Mac or *nix machine, you should be fine. Windows users should check out how to install OpenSHH with Cygwin. ([Only registered and activated users can see links. ])
Prepare Your iPhone
Assuming you've already got Installer.app installed on your iPhone (which you will have installed if you've gone through the jailbreak mentioned above), the first thing you need to do is install OpenSSH. So head to your iPhone's home screen and fire up Installer.app. Now go to the Install tab and tap on System -> OpenSSH and tap the Install button. Once it installs, exit Installer.app.
Start Up Your Ad-Hoc Network
On a Windows PC you'll need to set up Internet Connection Sharing. You can find instructions for doing so here ([Only registered and activated users can see links. ]) . Good luck!
Once you create your network, your computer won't be able to connect wirelessly to any Wi-Fi hotspot, just other devices.
Connect Your iPhone to Your Computer
To get your computer and iPhone talking, you'll need to connect your iPhone to the ad-hoc network we created above. To do so, go to the Settings application, tap Wi-Fi, and select your ad-hoc network from the list of available networks.
Once you're connected, tap the blue arrow next to your new network to get info on your connections—namely your IP address. Write that puppy down because you'll need it in a second.
Connect Your Computer to Your iPhone's Internet
Now it's time to make use of the SSH server we installed on our iPhone. From this point on, we're basically following our previous guide to encrypting your web browsing with an SSH SOCKS proxy. Open up your command line application of choice and enter the following:
ssh -ND 9999 root@YourIPAddress
...where YourIPAddress is replaced with whatever you wrote down above
If this is the first time you're SSHing into your iPhone, it may take a bit for your secure key to be generating, so give it at least 30 seconds. You'll be asked if you're sure you want to continue connecting (answer "yes") and then you'll be prompted for a password. At the time of this writing, the default password for OpenSSH on your iPhone is alpine, though you should change the root password when you get a chance.
After you've entered the correct password, the prompt will appear to hang. That's actually what should be happening, so you're on the right track.
Set Your Browser to Use SOCKS Proxy
At this point you just need to set your browser or operating system to use the SOCKS Proxy we've just set up to route our internet connection through the iPhone's EDGE connection
First, open the Safari Preferences (this guide was written for Safari, google how to for IE and youll find the answer, fairly straight forward), go to the Advanced tab, and click the Proxies "Change Settings" button. Make sure you're looking at your Airport advanced settings and are viewing the Proxies tab. Tick the SOCKS Proxy checkbox, enter localhost in the section labeled SOCKS Proxy Server and 9999 in the port next to it. Hit OK and Apply your settings. Then just head back to Safari and you're ready to browse.
Have you ever wanted to be able to scribble down notes and have them convert to text like on other touch screen phones? No? Yeah me neither, but incase you do check this:
Handwriting Recognition for iPhone Now Available (gizmodo)
Holy Egg Freckles! A chinese developer has released handwriting recognition software—both latin and chinese alphabets—for the iPhone. Similar to Graffiti, the classic writing software for Palms, you can setup HWPen from Installer.app to give you an a writing area that can take over the standard keyboard at the touch of button
You can download HWPen today using Installer.app. Go to "Sources," click on "Edit" and "Add" a new source:
[Only registered and activated users can see links. ]
Then refresh your sources and look for HWPen in the "All Packages" list.
The software is still in beta and it has a few errors—it doesn't work correctly in landscape mode, for example, but still a great start!
These are apps that I am currently using, downloaded via Installer. Feel free to also post anything not on this list that you use, and ill add it up. Remember to give a brief description as i have below.

What are repos? Repos, or repositorys, are sources that you add to the installer app to gain additional downloads from those said sources.
How to add a repo? Open installer, click on sources at the bottom, then click edit at the top, then click add. Then simply add the links as u see below EXACTLY (case sensitive) and click save. FInally, simply click reload sources and ull see the new stuff to download.
How do we know what repo will give what? Usualy its hard to tell. You can google around and find out or just add and remove.
